Publisher: Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group

On a recent road trip, I brought along Margaret Atwood's stupendous The Year of the Flood unabridged audiobook. Because I'm stupid, my Atwood history goes: Read The Handmaid's Tale and LOVED it. It was good- five star, top shelf, rave to your friends until they're sick of hearing about it good. Meanwhile, the NewBo City Market, a brand new indoor market we helped plan, opened in Cedar Rapids this October, helping to revitalize this Iowan city after a devastating flood. Then, two weeks later, I read The Year of the Flood. The Year of the Flood was, in one word, disappointing – and I figured this might be the case from the first 20 pages. The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood is book 2 in the Madd Addam sort-of trilogy, which would've been good to know BEFORE I read it. The Year of the Flood is a true sff novel, the dystopian world of the author acquiring depth, color and "reality". Biggert-Waters makes fundamental changes in the way our 45-year-old flood insurance system works. It seems that this year the world is experiencing a crisis of both too little water and too much. Cormac McCarthy was hardly likely to write a sequel to The Road , was he? Taxpayers have spent billions of dollars over two decades to reduce the potential damage from another massive flood like the one that ravaged Missouri and eight other states in 1993. I've read a bit of Atwood over the years. Then, waited nearly 2 years to read Oryx and Crake because I'm mental. Why I stuck though the whole 500 of them…is really anybody's guess. Last year's flood affected 24 states while the hardest hit were the coastal states and some Northern states. Alias Grace was the first, I think, followed by The Blind Assassin, followed by a couple of her earlier novels, followed by a bit of something else. Once you have overseen the end of the world, where else is there to go? Wait a minute… back in 1997, around the time of the death of Princess Diana, central and eastern Europe were experiencing “The Flood of the Century.” That's was also the year of Comet Hale-Bopp.
